Bill Stafford grew up in Athens NY and played for the NY Yankees from 1961 through 1962. In 1962, Stafford pitched a wining performance in game 3 of the World Series.

In recent years the village has been rejuvenated by a strong interest in the restoration of its historic buildings and homes. Recently the old Athens Opera House was purchased and the new owners have indicated their plans to restore the building into a brew pub and music hall.  Located on the corner of South Water Street is the Stewart House hotel and restaurant.

The Village of Athens was highly publicized for its location used in the 2005 film “The War of the Worlds”, starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. During the shooting, the Stewart House was used as a base of operations and is clearly seen in the movie.  Jack Nicholson’s film “Ironweed” was also filmed in Athens, NY.
